The First Sorrowful Mystery: The Agony in the Garden

Updated: Mar 11, 2019

We easily say, think of the worst, you must prepare. How easily we speak as such, as humans, we can think, but see what the future holds? No, we don’t. When the worst is at hand, we tremble with fear, don’t we? I don’t know about you, but for me, I’d run, hide or shrink, I’ll try my bestest to avoid whatever “worst” it may be, who is really ever prepared? When our thoughts slowly becoming reality, no one is ever ready.

How much more, was Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, He knows what awaits Him, spit, curse, shame, pain, wound, betrayal that He will have to go through.

“And He was withdrawn from them about a stone's cast, and kneeled down, and prayed, saying, Father, if Thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but Thine, be done. And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him. And being in an agony He prayed more earnestly: and His sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.” Luke 22:41-44

No wonder why His sweat was drops of blood, if I, just a simple question from my teacher trembles, how much more Him, to die, undeserving of it all. He, who should be glorified, to be crucified.

How amazing it is, that even at His lowest, He teaches us right? He shows us how to be human, that we can express our desires to the Father AND surrendering to the will of the Father. It’s not “asking-but”, “asking-if”, its asking-and.

Jesus, though knew, that He will suffer, never argued with the Father. He begged and surrendered to the Father three times. My prayer then was almost always begging, I want this, that, why not now? This and that?

Now, that I’ve gotten to know grace, I understood that surrendering is a grace, that in itself is a gift. Not everyone has truly surrendered but by grace. I bet, how many times have one said, up-to God, but one obeys flesh? We say up-to Him, but do we really rely on Him? Or rely on, I can do this on my own, my way kinda thing?
